Flip Florence – A Wordpress Video Blog

Flip Florence started as an idea I had before I moved to Italy. Back in January 2009, I was still at Tradedoubler (the affiliate marketing company), the London weather was grim – even for London – and I was looking for a way to get back to Italy. One sleepless night I found the Flip Mino HD online and I thought; “how cool to be able to do a travel video blog site for just £150.”

Once I eventually moved to Florence in June 2009, I immediately set about establishing Flip Florence. One of my main objectives was to make use of the Social Media that people in the internet marketing industry had been talking about and tie it all together. Making the blog the central hub of the network with all the relevant Social Media Channels taking care of what they did best: Flickr for photos, Twitter for starting conversations, YouTube for video etc. The summer was a bit of a blur of Italian lessons, filming video and editing in 40 degree heat on a hot Mac with no A/C so I don’t remember the exact date of launch but here’s how it was, Flip Florence 1.0

The template was Zoomstart to which I added a logo and then edited the CSS to match the colour palette I had chosen. At that stage, there were just outbound links to Twitter, Facebook and other Social Media channels. Zoomstart really is a great Wordpress video template and I had a lot of fun with it but I wanted a cleaner home page. Also, I had designed a newer, shinier logo which I wanted to use so the search for a new design was on. . .

After looking through many, many free video templates (and actually paying for one I decided against using) I found Studiopress. Brian’s designs were good and once I’d taken the plunge and purchased the Tubular theme I found the CSS was logically laid out. In fact, I’m currently developing 2 client sites based on other Studiopress templates and the clients love them.

Flip Florence had it’s revamp towards the end of 2009 and at the same time, I switched my main video hosting to Vimeo Plus. Any client who is potentially interested in online video should consider Vimeo Plus as you can set the privacy levels for each video. Sometimes you may not want your video to go viral. Why? Perhaps it is more profitable to offer it as a premium member-only service or you want to train staff or host presentations. The site still continues its evolution and being a testbed for Social Media channels before I suggest them to clients! New at the beginning of 2010 was a Foursquare account which I think has some really exciting potential, especially in the travel sector where location specific information is of vital importance. We’ve got a long way to go ’til the user base merits serious time investment but it’s one to watch. Also, Flip Florence is on Posterous. This is a really exciting proposition for clients who want to spread their content across many Social Media channels quickly and easily (with one email! ) For me, it allows two distinct offerings: FlipFlorence.com can still provide the edited Flip Mino videos but alongside that I can post all sorts of other content. If you’d like to know how to take advantage of these (and any other) Social Media channels drop me a line on my contact page
